LAURINBURG — Sandhills Athletic Conference play got off to a rough start for the Scotland girls basketball team.

The Lady Scots lost 52-31 against Jack Britt on Tuesday.

“It’s like the same story over and over again,” Scotland coach Mallarie Snow said. “Coming out flat. Not being ready or prepared. Not talking defensively.”

Asjah Swindell recorded 14 points for the Lady Scots (4-3, 0-1 SAC). Niaria Leach added 12 points.

Jack Britt (4-2, 1-0) held a 38-22 lead at the end of the third quarter, and the Lady Buccaneers increased their lead by starting the fourth quarter with a 10-1 run.

The Lady Scots suffered their second loss in a row.

“It’s just simple stuff we’ve got to take initiative of,” Snow said of her team’s performance.

Ashara Hayes led Jack Britt with 26 points.

Snow said she is confident her team can recover quickly from the two-game skid if they find the right mentality.

“Until they stop waiting for things to happen and start making them happen, it’s going to be tough,” Snow said.

Boys basketball team falls to Jack Britt

The Scotland boys basketball team (0-7, 0-1) lost 48-38 to Jack Britt on Tuesday.

After holding a 21-15 lead at halftime, Jack Britt (4-2, 1-0) used a 10-2 run to build on its lead in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Scotland’s C.J. Settles made a free throw to cut Jack Britt’s lead to 40-32. He then made a 3-pointer to make the score 40-35 with one minute left in the game.

After a pair of made free throws on Jack Britt’s end of the floor, Scotland’s Adonis Jackson made a 3-pointer to decrease the Buccaneers’ lead to four points with 40 seconds left.

Jack Britt converted on six consecutive free throws to end the contest.

Settles and Jackson finished with eight points apiece for Scotland.

Scotland coach Matt Justin said his team showed some signs of improvement against Jack Britt’s senior-laden lineup.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction,” Justin said.

Justin also said said a winless start to the season has taken its toll on his players.

“I think it’s starting to wear on them a little bit,” Justin said. “They’ve had several close games, and they haven’t been able to get over the hump.

All we can do is come in tomorrow and work,” he continued. “We have Purnell Swett on Friday, which is another chance and a good opportunity to try to get their first win.”
