Slow start proves costly as Scots lose to Bulldogs

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. — A slow start hurt the Scotland boys basketball team in a 66-44 loss at Marlboro County on Saturday night.

Marlboro led 18-2 after the first quarter, with Scotland’s only points coming from a pair of free throws by Trey Graham.

“We got off to a horrible start,” Scotland head coach Matt Justin said. “Couldn’t make a shot and struggled to guard. Gave up some easy baskets.”

The Fighting Scots (0-4) used a 3-pointer and a 3-point play by Purnell Swett transfer David Campbell to gain some momentum early in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs (3-3) held a 28-13 lead at halftime.

A layup by Campbell trimmed Marlboro’s lead to 36-20 in the third quarter, but a technical foul was then called on Scotland’s bench. Justin said that call ‘deadened’ his team’s momentum early in the second half.

Marlboro secured the win by outscoring Scotland 25-16 in the fourth quarter.

Scotland’s Garrett McRae scored all of his team-high 16 points in the second half.

Adonis Jackson had 12 points for the Scots. Campbell added 11 points.

Scotland finished 10-of-24 from the free throw line.

The Lady Scots (3-1) were led by Niaria Leach, who scored 21 points and connected on two 3-pointers.
