Senior athletes honored

LAURINBURG — The senior athletes who devoted countless hours to their respective sports and maintained high academic success will be easily recognized at graduation next weekend.

Scotland High School principal Brian Edkins presented 33 student-athletes with cranberry red stoles that read “Scholar Athlete” during Thursday’s Senior Awards Program.

Those scholar athletes that were recognized include: Trey Armstrong, Grant Burleson, George Butler, Karrigan Campbell, Nyjel Collins-Jackson, Quinton Covington, Trey Dixon, Macie Gibson, Tavis Harrington, Willow Holman, Matthew Hyatt, Jason Kang, Katie Lighthall, Daly Marcano, Ashley McGugan, Daizha McMillian, Justin McRae, Donovan O’Donnell, Bradley Pate, Amaya Pegues, Nahir Pegues, Ryan Phillips, Sam Poage, Darian Reeves, Mason Roberts, Tyler Sellers, Hunter Sheppard, TJ Smith, Ian Spangler, Cheyanne Strong, Tripp Wells, Chris Williams, and Tim Williams

In order to receive the stole, students had to participate in one or more sports for three of their four years, including their senior year, and needed to maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Superintendent Ron Hargrave presented seniors Jason Kang and Willow Holman with this year’s Superintendent’s Scholar Athlete Award. Kang and Holman had to play at least one varsity sport during their senior year and have the highest GPA in the Class of 2018.

Kang played second doubles on the boy’s tennis team and Holman played mid-field for the girl’s soccer team.

Students that earned athletic scholarships were also recognized.

The Fighting Scots football team had 11 players receive scholarships. The Lady Scots softball and volleyball teams each had two ladies earn scholarships.

The Fighting Scots baseball team also had two young men receive scholarships. Scotland High School’s cross country, basketball, cheerleading and track teams each had one student-athlete receive a scholarship.

— Coker College: Matthew Hyatt (Baseball)

— St. Andrews University: Ashley McGugan (Volleyball,) Kandon Luquer (Volleyball)

— Belmont Abbey College: Katie Lighthall (Softball)

— Lenoir-Rhyne University: Macie Gibson (Softball,) Warren Bell (Football)

— Fayetteville State University: Mylasia Pratt (Cross Country)

— Sandhills Community College: Niem Ratliffe (Basketball)
