Softball earns No. 6 seed, takes on Purnell

LAURINBURG — The Lady Scots softball team nearly pulled off the upset of the season in Rockingham on Friday as they gave the regular season champion Lady Raiders a run for their money.

The Lady Scots jumped out to a 7-1 lead through four innings, before they let victory slip from their fingers. Richmond rallied with one run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings before putting up a six spot in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with a win on Senior Night.

With the loss, the Lady Scots finish the season 9-9 overall and 5-9 in conference play to earn the No. 6 seed in the tournament. The Lady Scots will get a another chance against No. 3 Purnell Swett (9-5)

When the Lady Scots and Purnell Swett met in mid-March the Lady Rams won both games, 6-2 in game one and 2-0 in game two.

The two will meet again in Pembroke on Tuesday in the first round of the SAC-8 tournament at 7 p.m. The other first-round match ups pit No. 7 Pinecrest (2-12) against No. 2 Jack Britt (10-4) in Hope Mills while No. 8 Seventy-First (0-14) heads to Rockingham to take on No. 1 Richmond (14-0).

No. 5 Hoke (8-6) will be on the road in Lumberton to take on Lady Pirates (8-6).

The winner of Scotland/Purnell Swett will take on the winner of Pinecrest/Jack Britt. The winner of Hoke/Lumberton will play the winner of Seventy-First/Richmond on Wednesday, May 2 at 7 p.m. with the higher seeded team hosting.

The SAC-8 championship game will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 4 with the higher seeded team hosting.

Seeding for the NCHSAA 4A playoffs will take place on Monday, May 7 and first round games will begin on Wednesday, May 9.
