LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University softball team swept both of their final conference games against Allen University (S.C.) on Friday winning 12-0 in game one and 10-2 in game two.

The Lady Knights closed out their regular season in non-conference action on Saturday in a double header against Barton College. Barton won game one 9-4 and edged the Lady Knights in game two 3-1.

Game 1: SAU 12, Allen 0

In game one, sophomore starter S.K. Brown tossed her first career perfect game in the shutout with a career-high 11 strikeouts. The win as she improves to 5-15 on the season with a team-best 75 strikeouts.

It is the first perfect game/no-hitter for the Lady Knights since joining the NAIA in 2012.

Offensively, St. Andrews outhit Allen 12-0 as different Lady Knights recorded at least one hit.

Freshman center fielder Cassie Fortner went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a stolen base. Junior outfielder Amanda Shaffer went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and a stolen base. Fellow outfielder Reina Mondragon tallied two hits while sophomore third baseman Brennan Broadaway drove in two runs with her hit.

Game 2: SAU 10, Allen 2

St. Andrews got out to another fast start in game two against Allen scoring seven runs in the first two innings to take a 7-1 lead. The teams traded runs in the third before the Lady Knights put the game out of reach with a two runs in the fifth to take it 10-2.

Brennan Broadaway started game two throwing all five innings allowing two runs off three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Broadaway improved to 4-6 with the win and lowered her ERA to 4.60.

In the batter’s box, Broadaway leads the team with 47 hits and 11 doubles for a .297 batting average.

The Lady Knights out hit Allen 8-3 in game two with a 3 for 3 day from junior catcher Symphony Arguedas.

Arguedas also scored two runs, stole two bases and drove in another with her double. Reina Mondragon and sophomore third baseman Lily Pinto drove in two runs apiece while Nikki Santiago had the other multi-hit game scoring two runs with an RBI.

Game 1: Barton 9, SAU 4

St. Andrews started off game one against Barton trailing 2-1 after two innings, but rallied to take a one-run lead in the third. Barton continued to be productive offensively scoring two runs in each of the remaining five innings to take game one, 9-4.

Lady Knights starting pitcher S.K. Brown came into Sunday with confidence, but her defense let her down as she allowed six hits and just two earned runs with a walk and a strikeout to take the loss. Junior Nancy Amos threw the final two innings allowing four runs off six hits with two strikeouts.

St. Andrews totaled six hits led by Cassie Fortner who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. One of Fortner’s three hits was her first triple of the season. Mandy Shaffer and infielders Lexi Dawson and Nikki Santiago also tallied hits.

Game 2: Barton 3, SAU 1

A scoreless pitchers’ duel developed over the first four innings of game two as S.K. Brown went toe-to-toe with Barton starter Ashton Pegram.

Barton broke the stalemate in the fifth inning scoring three runs to end the afternoon for Brown. The Lady Knights starter threw 4 2/3 innings allowing three runs off seven hits with two walks.

The Lady Knights were able to get one run back in the sixth inning as third baseman Brennan Broadaway drove in center fielder Cassie Fornter on an RBI single.

In the circle, Broadaway threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The St. Andrews offense had six players record hits — Broadaway, Ashlyn Dial, Lexi Dawson, Lily Pinto, Reina Mondragon and Rachel Swartwood.

Dawson finished the year leading the team with a .345 batting average and a .460 on-base percentage. Fortner led the team in runs scored and RBIs. The Lady Knights center fielder tallied 30 runs scored and 22 RBIs.

St. Andrews finishes the 2018 season 18-30 overall while Barton improved to 23-27 and Allen falls to 1-23 in the AAC and 4-26 overall.
