BLUEFIELD, Va. — The St. Andrews University softball team saw its losing streak extend to 14 games on Wednesday in Virginia. The Lady Knights lost both ends of their conference doubleheader against Bluefield College, dropping game one, 7-2 before losing game two, 7-4.
St. Andrews last win came on March 10 in their first game against Bryan College since then the team has lost 14 consecutive games.
Game 1: Bluefield College 7, SAU 2
Bluefield College took a one-run lead after the first inning before the Lady Knights tied the game in the top of the fourth. The Lady Rams regained their lead with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth off St. Andrews starter S.K. Brown.
The Lady Knights got one run back in the fifth inning, but junior reliever Nancy Amos gave up two runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach, 7-2.
St. Andrews tallied seven hits in the game with a solo home run from first baseman Lexi Dawson, her first of the season. Third baseman Brennan Broadway drove in the Lady Knights other run. Middle infielders Ashlyn Dial and Nikki Santiago, freshman catcher Lucy Trujillo, Asucena Trujillo and junior outfielder Rachel Swartwood all had hits for the Lady Knights.
Brown (3-11) took the loss throwing four innings allowing five runs off six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Amos tossed the final two innings allowing two runs off two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Game 2: Bluefield College 7, SAU 4
St. Andrews led 2-1 after two innings and maintained their lead through the next four and a half innings. Bluefield College put up three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a two-run lead, 4-2.
The Lady Knights tied the game in the top of the seventh with two runs of their own, but it was all for naught as the Lady Rams won the game on a three-run homer to walk off with the victory.
Brennan Broadaway got the nod for the Lady Knights throwing three scoreless inning before Bluefield College tapped her for three runs in the fifth.
Overall, Broadaway threw 4 2/3 innings allowing four runs off eight hits with three walks and a strikeout. S.K. Brown came on in relief in the fifth and threw the final few frames allowing three runs off three hits with three errors, one walk and zero strikeouts.
Offensively, St. Andrews tallied seven hits led by multi-hit games from Broadaway and Ashlyn Dial who both went 2-for-4. Lexi Dawson and Broadaway both knocked down doubles. Asu Trujillo and senior pinch-hitter Katie Lougee each registered hits. Driving in runs were Dial, Nikki Santiago, Cassie Fortner, and catcher Symphony Arguedas.
St. Andrews falls to 14-26 overall and 2-16 in the conference while Bluefield improves to 8-15 overall and 5-11 in the conference.
The Lady Knights return home on Saturday, April 14 to host Milligan College (Tenn.) for Senior Day. The double header begins at 1 p.m.
