Cross country competes in XC Festival

LAURINBURG — The Scotland High School cross country teams traveled to Kernersville last week to compete in the Friday Night Lights XC Festival.

The Fighting Scots finished 14th out of 33 teams in the boys invitational race with 380 points. Marvin Ridge was the winning team with 84 points followed by Lincoln Charter with 178 and Bishop McGuinness with 180 points rounded out the top three teams.

Four members of the Lady Scots cross country team competed in the girls JV race, in order to have a team score there need to be six runners competing from a school.

Lady Scots freshman Madison Williams finished the girls JV race in 16th place out of 346 runners with a time of 22:17. The winning time of 20:30 was posted by Morgan Allison of Cuthbertson High School.

The next finisher for the Lady Scots was sophomore Madylin McMillan with a time of 25:18 to finish 142nd. Three minutes later freshman Audrey Lane crossed the finish line with a time of 28:14. Lady Scots senior Kathryn Goodwin finished in 290th place with a time of 28:23.

Fighting Scots

The Fighting Scots were led by sophomore Tony Strickland who finished the boy’s invitational race in 38th place, out of 280 runners, with a time of 18:01. The winning time of 16:22 was posted by Luke Wolaver of Marvin Ridge.

Senior Zachary Moore was the next finisher in 55th place with a time of 18:26 followed 30 seconds later by freshman Jackson Sellers in 86th place with a time of 18:56. Jackson’s older brother Tyler Sellers finished shortly after in 97th place with a time of 19:05.

Next to cross the finish line for the Scots was senior Sam Poage at the 19:37 mark for 133rd place. Fellow seniors Daly Marcano and Drew Guinn both finished the race in under 20 minutes. Marcano placed 142nd with a time of 19:40 while Guinn finished 190th with a time of 20:26.

The remaining Fighting Scots runners finished as follows: Jackson Purcell, 223rd with a time of 21:01; Bradley Pate, 227th, 21:09 and Gabe Williams, 268th with a time of 23:14.

The Scots had three runners compete in the boy’s JV race — Tra’von Campbell, Jennings Dean and Grayson Smith. Campbell was the top finisher for the Scots in 235th place with a time of 21:08. Dean finished 248th with a time of 21:15 and Smith finished 492nd with a time of 24:53.

The cross country teams were scheduled to race at Jack Britt on Tuesday, but that meet was cancelled due to the rain. Weather permitting, the team is scheduled to compete in their second conference meet on Sept. 19 at Pinecrest. Races are set to begin at 4 p.m.
