LAURINBURG — Police have arrested a Gibson woman who gave them false information hoping to avoid arrest after a traffic stop.

Shelby Dawn Farris, 25, of Livingston Road, was arrested for drug violations and resisting arrest Wednesday evening, according to Assistant Police Chief Terry Chavis.

“Officers were patrolling Caledonia Road when they stopped a Toyota Carola off of Kinlaw Drive for an equipment violation,” Chavis said. “They asked the female passenger for her identification, and she told them her name was Jessica Elvis and gave her birthdate as August 20, 1992. They couldn’t locate her in the system and asked her to step out of the car at which time they detected a strong odor of marijuana on her.”

A subsequent search turned up 1.5 grams of marijuana in Farris’ purse and a bag of “white powdery substance.”

Farris was detained and identified at which time it was discovered that she had outstanding warrants for probation violations.

She was arrested for possession of marijuana, resist delay and obstruct and federal probation violations and received a combined secured bond of $11,000, according to Chavis.

Farris was also arrested in January for resist delay and obstruct and possession of a schedule III substance after she ran from police twice in one evening, once escaping custody.

A check of Farris’ record shows that she has served several probation sentences for charges related to felony larceny and breaking and entering.
