LAURINBURG — Officials with the DaVita dialysis care have opened a new location in Maxton to help make kidney treatment more convenient for area patients.

The facility, at 202 East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, officially opened Aug. 14. A grand opening is planned for sometime in November.

Dr. Jonathan Nester serves as medical director at the Maxton location, as well as DaVita’s McColl, S.C. clinic. There are currently 13 staff members in Maxton, which includes technicians, registered nurses, and dietitians.

Currently, the location provides two shifts on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday. Operating hours are from 5:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The facility will be fully operational on Oct. 3.

DaVita currently has 20 patients in Maxton but hopes to add 16 additional patients as quickly as possible, according to Tim Brown, DaVita group facility administrator. The new facility is capable treating 28 patients a day.

Before opening the new location, DaVita’s nearest location was in St. Pauls. After analyzing the area and seeing a need for a facility in Maxton, the provider petitioned the state to move to the area. Plans for the Maxton facility started in 2012, according to Davita.

“The numbers tell us with diabetes is far past the numbers go that we can imagine 13 million adults are in some form of renal disease,” Brown said. “We are big proponents and raise money to fund in state renal disease research and identify how to help people before they need dialysis.” DaVita has raised $10 million for kidney research.

Dialysis is the treatment of those with kidney failure by cleaning toxins out of the blood.

DaVita is an international dialysis provider with over 2,800 clinics in nine different countries, however its largest footprint in the U.S.

The dialysis center provides home support as well as center support for patients using federal aid and commercial insurance. Patients of the Maxton DaVita location are eligible for privileges to be admitted into the Pinehurst Nephrology Group.

The largest provider of reimbursements to DaVita is the federal government, according to Brown, who said it is responsible for bringing in 93 percent of revenues, while commercial makes up eight to nine percent.
