LAURINBURG — The Scotland County branch of the NAACP will hold its Mother of the Year program on April 28.
The annual pageant is planned for 4 p.m at Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Deidre McBride, pastor of Fletcher Grove Missionary Church, is the speaker.
The choir at Fletcher Grove will perform.
Any female member of a NAACP branch over age 18 may participate as a contestant. Through friends, family, churches and other sponsors, the contestants raise money for the local NAACP. The contestant who raises the most money is crowned the branch’s Mother of the Year and advances to the state competition.
Sherry Kelly, a member of Jones Chapel, is the current NAACP Mother of the Year.
“Serving as Mother of the Year is almost like being Miss America,” said Rev. Elizabeth Anderson, who is MOY co-chair with Alexis Tyson. “The winner represents the branch in the annual Christmas parade and the MLK program and at other events.”
Contestants can contact 910-277-8890 or email [email protected] for information.
Proceeds go to the local and state branches of the NAACP.
“The purpose of Mother of the Year is help the branch with events like the back-to school project that provides school supplies to students and Winter Wonderland that helps needy children at Christmas,” Anderson said. “The fundraiser allows the NAACP to continue to serve the community.”
The church is at 11761 Johns Road.
