APEX — The Scotland High Winter Guard team made the 85-mile trek to Apex on Saturday and brought home some extra hardware in the form of a first-place award.
Competing in the annual Winter Blast: Indoor Winter Guard and Percussion Competition, The Fighting Scots put together an all-around score of 68 to take the top honors at Apex Friendship High.
“We’re very proud of them,” Scotland’s Director of Bands Brittan Goodwin said. “This is their third competition (of the season) and they’ve improved each time.”
Scotland High finished third in it first competition at Holly Spring High, then took second place at Panther Creek High in Cary last week.
That sustained improvement has impressed judges from the Atlantic Indoor Association enough that the Fighting Scots have been moved from the Regional A2 classification into the Regional A1 classification for more experienced squads.
“That’s both good news and challenging news,” Goodwin said. “It means we are getting better, but it also means the competition will be stronger. We haven’t competed at that level is many years — but we’re very excited for them.”
Scotland High, which has only one senior on the 11-member team, will compete next on March 23 at Green Hope High. The following week, the team will participate in the Atlantic Indoor Association championships at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville before wrapping up the season on April 2 with an exhibition at Scotland High.
“We’ve got a few weeks to work and get better,” Goodwin said. “But I’m very happy with how hard the girls are working and it’s showing in the competitions so far.”
