LAURINBURG — The Scotland County Board of Elections has a new board member, and three others have bee reappointed by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

Bonnie Schenck, a Republican, was appointed on Tuesday by the state’s BOE.

The three remaining board members, who were reappointed this week, are:

— Hal Culberson, a Republican who was originally appointed May 1, 2008

— Harriet Jackson, a Democrat originally appointed Feb. 7, 2019

— Mac McInnis Jr., a Democrat originally appointed March 20, 2020

Former State Sen. William Purcell, a Democrat who has served as the board chairman, is expected to be reappointed.

”The chairman will be appointed by the governor and I do expect Dr. Purcell to return to that position,” said Dell Parker, director of the Scotland County Board of Elections. “There will be a meeting on July 20 at noon for the members to take the required oath of office pursuant to G.S. 163-31.”

Election filing

Despite the fact that the 2020 U.S. Census numbers have not been finalized, in essence bringing into question the redrawing of district boundaries, candidate filing for municipal elections remains on track.

For now.

In Scotland County, Parker said the candidate filing will begin Friday at noon for the towns of East Laurinburg, Gibson, Wagram and Maxton. The filing period will end on Friday, July 16 at noon.

Things are different for the city of Laurinburg, however.

Senate Bill 722 has postponed Laurinburg’s election until March 2022, which moved the candidate filing date until December.
