LAURINBURG — Police are investigating a shooting after a vehicle pulled up to officers Saturday night with three injured men inside.

According to Capt. Chris Young with the Laurinburg Police Department, officers responded to the area of Caledonia and Old Lumberton roads around 9:50 p.m. While they were attempting to locate the original location of the shooting when the vehicle pulled up to the officers stating that there were passengers inside with injuries.

Young stated that the victims were a 24-year-old of Produce Market Road, a 20-year-old of Washington Street and a 17-year-old minor. All had non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

“The three were transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital for treatment,” Young said. “ The three victims were not forthcoming with information pertaining to the incident.”

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Laurinburg Police Department at 910-276-3211. All information received will be kept confidential.

This is the sixth shooting since the beginning of 2021. Last year, Laurinburg saw a rise in gun violence with 115 incident reports filed with the department, as well as 724 shots fired calls during the 12 months.

Attempted murder

On Jan. 13, Laurinburg Police responded to Plaza Terrace Apartments in reference to a person being shot. Upon arrival, officers located a 45-year-old female unresponsive with a gunshot wound.

The woman is believed to have been shot by her husband, 77-year-old Kaid Mohamed Morshed, who was charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon in the presence of a minor and discharging a firearm in the city limits.

Morshed was originally given no bond for the charges, but after his first appearance on Jan. 14 District Court Judge Christopher Rhue gave him a $3 million bond. The public defender’s office was appointed to represent Morshed and a probable cause hearing was scheduled for Jan. 26.

According to law enforcement, the victim remains in critical condition at an undisclosed medical facility. No new information has been released by investigators at this time — including what type of weapon was used or where the victim was wounded.
