Too Much Sylvia, which last performed at Laurinburg AFter Five in 2013, will return this year for Friday’s concert at the James L. Morgan Recreation Complex.

LAURINBURG — With a repertoire spanning six decades and an even greater number of musical styles, Charlotte group Too Much Sylvia will heat up an already sultry summer evening on Friday in the second installment of this year’s Laurinburg After Five concert series.

Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. at the James L. Morgan Recreation Complex on Turnpike Road, home to the Laurinburg After Five events since 2013. The series is organized by the Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce.

Disc jockey Jason Butler with Sandhills Sounds will warm up the hundreds expected to attend before Too Much Sylvia — styled too MUCH SyLviA — takes the stage from 6-9 p.m.

The group, which formed in 1991, last performed at Laurinburg After Five in 2013. In 2014 Too Much Sylvia won a pair of Carolina Beach Music Association Cammy Awards for “Song of the Year” and “Smoothie of the Year” for “Stepped Right Outta My Dream.”

Friday night’s setlist promises to comprise a medley of beach, 70s, 80s, and country music with a sprinkling of current chart-toppers.

A bounce house and the Morgan Center playground will be open for those too young to sit still for a three-hour concert. A number of food vendors will be stationed at the park, including Laurinburg After Five title sponsor Murphy-Brown LLC with dishes made from its signature pork products.

“We just hope everyone comes out ready for a good time, to listen to great music and have fun as always,” said Chamber director Janet Smith.

Admission is $1 at the gate for adults. Kids 12 and under are free. As in years past, attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to set up a comfortable viewing spot, but coolers and pets will not be allowed.

Concerts in July and August will round out the annual summer series with Midnight Allie, led by former Sea Cruz member Allie Privette, on July 17 and the Fantastic Shakers headlining on August 14.

During July’s concert, the winner of a $500 raffle will be selected. Tickets will be available on Friday.

Olsten and the City of Laurinburg are sponsors of this year’s Laurinburg After Five series, along with Environmental Repairs Inc, FCC of North Carolina, Nic’s Pic Kwik, Scotland County, Scotland Motors, WLNC, RA Jeffreys Distributing Compan, and 50 other local businesses.
