McQueen tabbed city’s fire chief

LAURINBURG —The city of Laurinburg has announced that Lt. Jordan C. McQueen will be stepping into his new position of fire chief on Friday.

The city announced the promotion of McQueen on Wednesday, which comes after former chief Randy Gibson retired on Aug. 31.

McQueen is a Scotland County native who began his service with the Laurinburg Fire Department at 16 as part of the Fire Explorer program. Then, in 2012, he joined the city in a permanent capacity as a fire engineer.

Since 2012 he has risen through the ranks of the department becoming a fire lieutenant and inspector in 2013 and is also currently serving as the vice commander of the Scotland County Rescue Squad.

“Jordan has been a key part of the success of our Fire Department,” said City Manager Charles Nichols. “We are thrilled to promote him to this important position.”

McQueen has received numerous awards from the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal on behalf of the North Carolina Safe Kids and Injury Prevention Division including a “Badge of Courage” after saving a child who was left unattended inside a hot car in 2016.

He also received the “Excellence in Injury Prevention by an Individual” award for his efforts in child injury prevention in hot car displays, fire safety and prevention and child passenger safety.

“My overall objective as fire chief is to serve the city of Laurinburg by providing a safe environment for the citizens of this great city as well as the county rural fire districts,” McQueen said.

McQueen is a graduate of Scotland High School and has a 4-month-old son Sawyer Hux with wife Brooke Weatherford McQueen.
