LAURINBURG — Scotland Memorial Foundation and Scotland Health have been busy planning another “fun-filled,” educational event for women of all ages.
On Saturday, Feb. 3, the annual Women’s Health Event, hosted by Scotland Memorial Foundation, will be held at Avinger Auditorium located on the campus of St. Andrews University in Laurinburg. In addition to educational breakout sessions facilitated by local medical providers and professionals, the day offers fun, food, and goodies.
The theme of the event is “Healthy TogetHER” and the day is filled with the opportunity for ladies to learn more about themselves and their own health issues, to laugh while doing so, and to love themselves by taking the time, just for them, to join us on this day.
The event kicks into high gear at 7 a.m. with health screenings including cholesterol, A1C, body fat, height and weight, flexibility, foot checks, and blood pressure. Fasting is required for those who desire to have their blood drawn for the cholesterol test. As soon as the women complete their screenings, they may take part in the breakfast items provided. There are a limited number of spots available the morning of this event but appointments are available prior for convenience.
At 8:30 a.m., the women will gather together in the auditorium for a warm welcome and an introduction to what the day holds. Two separate breakout sessions will offer educational experiences. Each individual will choose from 16 different topics for their own health interests. From presentations on cancer, diabetes, decluttering 101 and more, there is a variety of offerings.
Following the final breakout session, participants will return to the auditorium to be served a healthy lunch as they are introduced to this year’s keynote speaker, Kacey Ruegsegger Johnson. A survivor of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, Kacey Ruegsegger Johnson is a wife and mother of four, a national spokesperson for bone and tissue donation, and an inspirational speaker.
Her story includes turbulent teenage years marred by the sudden deaths of several friends, a quick slide into a deep depression, her own suicidal ideation, and the life-altering experience of sustaining serious injuries during the Columbine shooting.
“These educational events would not be possible without the support of many individuals and businesses who contribute to Scotland Memorial Foundation’s Putting on the Ritz,” said Misty McMillan, executive director of Scotland Memorial Foundation. “Historically this event is the first Saturday in February, but this is our first time back since COVID. This is a great event and the whole community is involved including the Scotland County Health Department and St. Andrews.”
