Summer meal program begins Monday

LAURINBURG — The Scotland County Summer Meals Program begins on Monday — but volunteers are still needed to help feed the youth of the county.

According to Sharon Quick, coordinator for the program, drivers to help with deliveries to the meal sites are needed along with general volunteers.

“We need people to help with all the little things that come up on a day-to-day basis,” Quick said. “If people want to work at the feeding sites, there are sites that could use more volunteers. If anyone wants to volunteer we have a slot somewhere for them.”

Some of the things that volunteers might be required to do include packing the meals, clean-up work and next-day preparation. Anyone who wants to can volunteer and there are no amount of days required to volunteer, as the program runs for 10 weeks.

Quick also added that, from July 8 until July 31, the mobile feeding sites will have “Wheelie“ along with the STEM bus. Each site has different times of the week, with varying times for lunch, with only a handful serving breakfast.

“The Scotland County Meal Program is an example of how our community can come together,” Quick said. “It’s bigger than just one group, we’re all coming together to provide meals to the kids in the community… no one can do it themselves, we all have to work together.”
