LAURINBURG — Those who might be having trouble with their plants or want to learn to grow some will have several opportunities coming up.

The North Carolina State University Extension Master Gardeners will be hosting three events over the next few months. The first will be on Wednesday at the Scotland Memorial Library from 1 to 3 p.m with “Ask a Master Gardener.”

People are encouraged to drop in during the time period to speak with a Master Gardener about any plant questions including insect, disease or other problems.

Shannon Newton, agriculture and horticulture area agent with the Scotland County Cooperative Extension, said that if the Master Gardeners don’t know how to answer a question they will find out for the customer and get back in contact with them to let them know.

“The Master Gardeners help us extend our reach in the community,” Newton said. “And they provide continual outreach through programs like these.”

The Master Gardeners will also be hosting two more upcoming classes as well, one for perennials plants and another on herbs.

The perennials plants and soil needs class will be a two-hour class on April 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the Scotland County Cooperative Extension. Newton says that the class will focus on the top 25 pollinator plants for native bees as well as the role of the soil in plant health.

On April 24 will be the know and grow herb class. The class will go over how to grow and dry herbs for people who want to learn to care for their own. More information will be available later on the class.

Newton added that next year Scotland County will be offering classes for community members to become an Extension Master Gardener volunteer. The gardeners receive the education in exchange for volunteer work in the community.

Anyone interested in becoming a Master Gardener should call Newton and speak to her — Hoke County is offering the classes currently.

All the classes are free and open to the public. For the April 1 class it is asked that you register by March 29. To register call the Extension Office at 910-277-2422.
