LAURINBURG — The Scotland County Board of Education unanimously disagreed with the proposed bill that would allow teachers to carry guns in schools.

The School Security Act of 2019 was filed last Wednesday and Superintendent Ron Hargrave explained that there seems to be more traction with the bill this time than when it was pushed in the past.

The board agreed to have a brief written up and brought to the next meeting to voice the board’s opposition, with Chairman Rick Singletary saying that there are school resource officers in each of the schools and teachers shouldn’t have to be put in those kinds of situations.

“I’m leery of adults carrying weapons in classes,” Singletary said. “I want to stress that they aren’t trained in situations and I don’t want to put them in that position.”
