Laurinburg Exchange

City tax deadline approaching

LAURINBURG — As the new year rolls in, so does the grace period for residents to pay their taxes.

Property owners in the city of Laurinburg were billed around July and August and were due to submit their payments for their taxes beginning Sept. 1 — but have until Jan. 6 to pay them before interest begins to accrue.

As of Thursday, there had been $2,306,227.35 collected for the 2018 taxes according to City Manager Charles Nichols. The amount is around 90 percent of what was collected as of Dec. 31 of last year.

“There is a $172,953.82 difference,” Nichols said. “We have four more days of December. We should be able to collect that much.”

For those who still need to pay, they can do so at City Hall or mail in a payment. While interest begins to accrue on Jan. 6, property owners have until February to pay before their name is printed in The Exchange for failing to pay.

“Delinquent letters are sent out in February,” Nichols said. “Names will go in the paper in March after council approves them, which is usually around the second week of March.”

Nichols also said that, if taxes are paid before Aug. 31, there is a 1-percent discount on them.

City Hall is currently located at 203 Atkinson St. until the new building is complete. For those who wish to mail their taxes, they can be sent to P.O. Box 249, Laurinburg, N.C., 28353.
