Crystal Cove to stay through January

LAURINBURG — There’s no ice to melt, but ‘Tis the Season’s Crystal Cove Skating Rink will soon be going away.

Skating enthusiasts will only have weekends to enjoy the rink once January arrives. Until then, the rink will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. except Sunday, when it is open 2 to 8 p.m. — weather permitting.

Mother Nature has been an unwelcome guest at the skating rink in downtown Laurinburg, postponing the opening of the rink and shutting the rink down several times since because of rain.

“I am so tired of this rain,” said Terry Parker the director of ‘Tis the Season. “The rink does not open on rainy days and it is supposed to rain the next six days.

“It’s dangerous for skaters to use the rink when it’s wet …” she added.

Still, when it’s been open, Crystal Cover has been a popular spot, attracting skaters of all ages during the holidays. And though the Christmas season may be ending, Parker still has a special treat up her sleeve for the community.

“People have come from Lumberton and South Carolina to use it,” said Parker. “It has been busy.”

“The rink will stay open on weekends through January,” she added. “I love that the community is supporting it.”

In January the new hours will be Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 8 p.m.

Crystal Cover is located on the corner of East Church and Biggs streets. The cost is $5 per hour and skates are available to those who need them.
