LUMBERTON — The National Association of University Women’s Robeson-Scotland Branch nd the National Association of University Women – Southeast Section honored Mazie Shaw Gibson as its Woman of the Year 2017-18 during a celebration on Nov. 16.

The Southeast Section consists of 25 branches spanning the states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Gibson was recognized for her work with educational programs, community projects, health ministry, and developing a program known as the “Inasmuch Reading – Mentoring Program” while partnering with other individuals and organizations who are working toward the same purpose in the community.

She currently serves as president of NAUW Robeson-Scotland Branch and is a strong advocate of NAUW’s mission. Ms. Gibson exemplifies with sincere desire to serve the community. In addition to NAUW, Gibson is an advisory member of Robeson Early College High School, a member of the Pilgrim Court Order of Calanthe No. 480, charter member of Red Springs Las Amigas, member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., member of Retired Robeson Association of Educators, NCAE, Phi Delta Kappa, and McCormick Chapel MBC in Red Springs.

The celebration was held at the Pine Crest Country Club in Lumberton, where Gibson was presented with a plaque and accolades for her outstanding work promoting the mission of the National Association of University Women.

The National Association of University Women was founded in 1924 in Washington, D.C. The mission of NAUW is to serve women, youth and the disadvantaged in our communities and in developing countries by addressing educational issues, advancing the status of women’s issues, and collaborating with allied organizations.

Any woman holding a bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited college, university or scientific school is eligible for membership in the National Association of University Women.
