LAURINBURG — Republican incumbent Ralph Kersey celebrated his re-election for sheriff at Jerry’s Deli on Tuesday night surrounded by friends, supporters and his family.

Kersey defeated his Democrat challenger John Martin by a margin of 5,472 to 5,104.

Kersey spoke to many individuals personally before addressing the crowd, saying the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office overcame numerous challenges in the last four years.

“We faced a lot of obstacles at the Sheriff’s Office that many sheriffs throughout history have never had to face here in Scotland County,” said Kersey.

He mentioned an SBI investigation that lasted 18 months, the loss of a child in the county, the loss of a deputy, a cancer diagnosis, and Hurricane Florence.

“We went through an SBI investigation where they proved everything to be false; and then Hurricane Florence, having to evacuate the jail — but everybody stepped up and we did what was needed to be done,” he said.

Kersey stated that his faith is what pushes him to do his job — not party affiliation.

“I always knew that this race would not be easy because of being a Republican running in a county that is around 85 percent registered Democrat,” said Kersey. “If it was up to me there would be no party name at this level. I refer to myself as a sheriff that protects(and) serves all people, not just Democrat or Republican.”

Kersey thanked his supporters — but added that he still has another challenge ahead.

“I truly love Scotland County (and) I know tonight that I think I have around 5,000 people that I’m going to have to prove to again that I’m their sheriff and that I love them more than those who voted for me — because there is nothing about me that is impartial,” Kersey said.

Democrat John Martin took his loss in stride, saying that the people of the county had spoken.

“I really appreciate all the support from my family and friends. Now, I want to push the community to support the law enforcement in this county,” stated Martin.

Despite losing by just 368 votes, he said he has no plans to ask for a recount.

All results remain unofficial until totals are certified next Friday.
