LAURINBURG – The Laurinburg and Southern Railroad closed a section of U.S. 401 (McColl Highway) on Thursday to replace its rail crossing.

The railroad closed the four-lane highway just to the west of the road’s interchange with U.S. 15-501 in Laurinburg. The highway is expected to reopen by Friday afternoon on Aug. 31.

Traffic going south on U.S. 401 will detour at the U.S. 15-501 exit, then go left onto Plant Road, then left onto Rea Magnet Road, then left onto Sneads Grove Road, then right at traffic light to re-enter U.S. 401 South.

Traffic headed north on U.S. 401 will take a right onto King Street, left onto Railroad Street, then left onto Gill Street, left onto U.S. 501 Business to on-ramp at U.S. 401 North.
