LAURINBURG — A Wilmington man was the second victim of a scam aimed at Lowe’s happening not just in Scotland County but around North Carolina.
The man came to the Laurinburg Lowe’s on Tuesday to purchase a discounted zero-turn lawnmower he had found on a social media selling app. The man met an individual dressed as a Lowe’s employee in the Lowe’s parking lot and gave him $1,600 for the lawnmower. He then waited outside but the individual never came back.
This is the second time in the past two weeks someone had taken money for individuals to buy a lawnmower in Lowe’s. Last Thursday a Laurinburg resident of King Tuck Road reported that he had stopped a Lowe’s employee in the parking lot about a lawnmower. The employee took him inside and discussed the mower. The victim then gave the man $1,500 to ring him up for the lawnmower, but the employee never returned and was discovered he wasn’t an employee at all.
According to Laurinburg Police Captain Chris Young, the scam is going around North Carolina by using social media selling apps such as Let-Go to advertise lawnmowers for sale at employee discounts. The suspects dress like employees and convince the victims that they’re going to be purchasing the lawnmower with their employee discount, then they take the money and don’t come back.
The police are currently trying to obtain copies of surveillance videos to see if the suspect in Tuesday’s incident was the same as the suspect as Thursday’s. The suspect on Thursday was described as a black male, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and wearing a Lowe’s vest, khaki’s and a white shirt. The incidents are currently under investigation.
