LAURINBURG — Much of Scotland County awoke Thursday morning to news of a shooting the afternoon before.

According to reports from the Laurinburg Police Department, a shooting took place at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday that left a man fighting for his life.

Around 5:45 p.m. the Laurinburg Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the 900 block of McGirts Bridge Road near I. Ellis Johnson Elementary School, according to Police Captain Chris Young.

Young said that officers located the victim, 42-year-old Derrick Dent of Queensdale Street, and transported him to Scotland Memorial Hospital. Dent was later transferred to an undisclosed hospital where he died from his injuries later that night.

The Police Department is currently investigating the incident with several leads. However, Young said they are asking for anyone who was in the area who might have information to contact the department at 910-276-3211 to help with the case.
