LAURINBURG — Scotland County will embrace the girls of summer starting Saturday when the Dixie Softball State Championships kick off with games at the James L. Morgan Recreation Complex and Optimist Park in Laurinburg.
The 59-team field, which includes three host teams from Scotland County, enjoyed the opening ceremonies on Friday evening before a rousing Laurinburg After Five event that included a free concert, pizza and plenty of activities for the more than 700 players.
The evening was a chance for players, coaches and fans to meet, mingle and enjoy some fellowship before the competition gets started on Saturday.
The five-day state tournament — which will have games played on Saturday through Wednesday — features a total of six divisions split up into age groups. All six will crown state titles on Wednesday and the six divisions are: 5 to 6 years old (five teams); 7 to 8 years old (11 teams); 9 to 10 years old (six teams in the traditional bracket and eight teams in the x-play bracket); 11 to 12 years old (six teams in the traditional bracket, 11 teams in the x-play bracket); 13 to 15 years old (eight teams); and 16 to 19 years old (four teams).
Admission to the tournament is $7 daily.
The North Carolina state champions will earn a berth in the Dixie Softball World Series, which will be played in Alexandria, Louisiana, starting July 27.
