Police: DWI stop ends in S.C.

LAURINBURG – A traffic stop that started on Plaza Road ended with the driver being arrested in McColl,S.C. after a long, low-speed chase.

Tiara Young, 25, of Pleasure Lane Bennettsville, S.C. was arrested when the chase ended in McColl for driving while impaired and will face charges in Laurinburg as well.

The 12.5 mile-chase began when officers responded to a call about a possible drunken driver on Plaza Road near Smithfield’s Barbeque at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Assistant Police Chief Terry Chavis.

“The officer got behind the vehicle that then pulled into the Nic’s on 401 and Hasty Road and observed several violations,” Chavis said. “He enacted his blue lights and the driver failed to stop traveling into Marlboro County.”

The chase went down US 401 where the driver took a right on Academy Road and headed in the direction of McColl with the driver failing to keep the car in the correct lane.

Once in McColl, Laurinburg officers contacted Marlboro County authorities for assistance. The driver was finally stopped near Beverly Creek Road in McColl where she was arrested by South Carolina Highway Patrol police for DWI.

Laurinburg Police swore out warrants against Young for failure to heed blue lights/ siren, failure to maintain lane and careless and reckless driving, according to Chavis.
