LAURINBURG — Laurinburg Police Department is investigating a break in and what they suspect is an arson at a defunct day care center.

Police were called to Little Sproutz Day Care and Learning Center on McKay Street Monday evening shortly after 5:30, according to Assistant Police Chief Terry Chavis.

The report of the fire was called in by two men who spotted the grass burning at the front of the building. The men attempted to put out the fire and called 911, police said.

The building’s owner, Terry Brown, did a walk through with authorities and observed that windows to the exterior door had been broken out. The fire suppression system was also triggered contributing to damage to the building’s interior.

The building sustained $3,200 in damage, according to Chavis.

Little Sproutz closed in 2016. The building was last known secure on April 25.
