LAURINBURG — Police say stealing an assortment of candy wasn’t so sweet for one Laurinburg man.

Ricky Lamont Wade found himself behind bars after taking a handful of Mr. Goodbars early Friday morning, according to Assistant Police Chief Terry Chavis.

Wade, 48, of Old Lumberton Road, was arrested on charges of larceny and drug violations after police say they caught him with merchandise pilfered from a local convenience store, Chavis said.

An employee of the Kangaroo Express on North Main Street called police at 1:40 a.m. to say that a man had stolen 24 packs of Skittles candy and a case of Mr. Goodbar bars total value $57.71 and fled the store on foot headed north.

“Officers responded and saw a male matching the description of the suspect walking north on the sidewalk toward O’Reilly. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit,” Chavis said.

A search of Wade’s person turned up three tenths of a gram of crack cocaine, and the candy bars were recovered in Wade’s backpack, police said.

He was arrested with felony possession of cocaine, misdemeanor resisting arrest and misdemeanor larceny. Wade was given a $5,100 secured bond.
