LAURINBURG — Extra police were placed on campus at Scotland High Thursday afternoon following a threat.

The threat was called in to the school at 11:30 a.m., according to Capt. Chris Young.

“The caller said Scotland High ‘is going to be shot up and a Richmond County senior,’ and hung up,” Young said.

Police were called in to support the Scotland High’s resource officer and Richmond Senior High was notified.

Richmond placed an extra deputy at the school’s gate to check IDs and verify why people were coming on campus.

The threat could not be confirmed and was called in from an anonymous number that could not be traced, according to Young.

As of the end of the school day on Thursday, there were no incidents at either school.

Scotland’s principal Brian Edkins sent a message to parents.

“As you know, one our main goals is to keep you informed,” Edkins said. “I am calling this afternoon to let you know that we received a call earlier today where an anonymous caller made threats against Scotland and Richmond High Schools. Law enforcement in both counties were contacted and after investigating, determined the threat not to be credible. However, as a precaution, we had additional security on campus this afternoon.

“As always, we take any threat to our schools and students very seriously and as we continue to remind our students, we want to remind you as well, if you ever hear or see anything concerning, please let a school or district administrator or law enforcement officer know. “
