LAURINBURG — Scotland Health Care System celebrated Certified Nurses Day on Tuesday by honoring its 37 board-certified nurses.

Certified nurses were invited to an afternoon celebration in the W.R. Dulin Center located on the Scotland Health Care System campus. All nurses in attendance were welcomed and recognized by Greg Wood, president and CEO, and thanked by Bebe Holt, chief nursing officer and vice president of Patient Care Services for their dedication to become board certified.

“To take the extra step to become board certified speaks volumes for the 37 nurses we honored tonight, and we just wanted to make sure they were recognized for their hard work on this special day,” stated Bebe Holt. “We are very proud of each one of them and want to make sure that their commitment to giving quality care is recognized by Scotland Health Care System.”

Board certification of nurses plays an increasingly important role in the assurance of high standards of care for patients and their loved ones. Nursing, like health care in general has become increasingly complex. While a registered nurse license provides entry to general nursing practice, the knowledge-intensive requirements of modern nursing require extensive education, as well as a strong personal commitment to excellence by the nurse.

Scotland Health Care System encourages national board certification for all its nurses. Patients are encouraged to inquire whether there are certified nurses on staff when they visit a hospital or their primary care provider. There are many nursing certification specialties such as medical-surgical, pediatric, pain management, cardiac vascular, oncology, hospice, case management, emergency nursing, critical care and many others.

Many nursing certification bodies exist to serve the full range of specialized nursing care offered in the contemporary health care system; national nurse-certifying bodies should be accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification or the American Nurse Credentialing Center.
