LAURINBURG — Harley Norris of Harley’s Tuxedo and Gifts will hold an open house on Thursday to help kick-off the Christmas shopping season.
It is Norris’ 10th Christmas Open House event. The event is co-sponsored by the Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce. It will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the store on 125 Main St.
“It’s our way to kick-off business for the chamber and for the community and encourage people to shop local,” Norris said. “We always hold it the Thursday before Thanksgiving because when the weekend of Thanksgiving gets here everybody’s ready to go out of town and so we want them to see what we have at our shop”
Norris is expecting more 100 people to come through the open house to check out the Christmas gifts and attire and to enjoy a complementary refreshments provided by the Chamber.
The shop has been open for 10 years, but Norris has been in the clothing business for 30 years now. He originally worked in Barron’s Mens Wear, a clothing store that operated out of where the Storytelling and Arts Center building is now. He work in Barron’s for 20 years before opening Harley’s, which provides everything from clothing and candles to wall decor and recycled license plate jewelry.
“We try to find as many gifts as we can that are either reclaimed or that are made in America because they are from small businesses just like us,” he said. “I go to a gift market in Atlanta about twice a year to get the items.”
He also shops online to find Scottish themed attire, fan wear for the Fighting Scots, holiday clothing ad gifts, recycled products, and environmentally friendly products.
“I have been grateful in the past 10 years for the good people in this town that do support me and find something inside the shop to give as gifts,” he said. “During the open house people can come in to see what we have, shop and enjoy a refreshment with their neighbors and colleagues.
