A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 Hillside Cemetery officiated by Pastor Woody Byrd. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at graveside and also at the family home.
Doris was born on Sept. 6, 1936 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Mima Moore and Leon Goodwin. She was the beloved wife to the late Council Alston Melvin. Before her illness, she worked in textiles with Springs Mills and with ARA Vending Company at JP Stevens, Inc., the Eaton Corporation, and in hospitality with Comfort Inn. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who knew her. Doris enjoyed cooking, shopping, and spending time at the beach. She also enjoyed watching her favorite television shows: NCIS, Golden Girls, and game shows.
She was also preceded in death by grandchild Lyndsie Melvin, son-in-law Billy Norton, and brother Larry Bruce Goodwin.
Left to cherish Doris’ memory are her children, daughters Sue Norton of Laurinburg and Barbara Norton and husband Jerry of Laurinburg and son David Melvin and wife Kristy of New Bern, brother Tim Rhyne and wife Lu Ann of Laurinburg, sister Margaret Veshinski and husband Dan of Marston, sister-in-law Barbara Goodwin of Marston, four grandchildren: Billie Jo Connell, TSgt Michael Norton and wife Megumi, Jason Norton and wife Brooke, and Kristen Melvin, ten great grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews, her canine buddy Cee Cee and grand dogs Tanner and Kimbo.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Scotland County, P.O. Box 1033, Laurinburg, NC 28353 or the Hillside Freewill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1492, Laurinburg, NC 28353.
