Richmond defeated the Scotland High school’s men’s tennis team 9-0 Thursday night, dropping the Scots down to 2-3 on the year.

Scotland was dominated by its rival, as the Raiders won every singles match as well as every doubles match. Things started off badly for Scotland, when their top singles player was defeated. Jacob Blackman, playing in the number one position for Scotland, faced off with Colt Auman. Auman won that game in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.

It didn’t get any easier for Scotland from there. Walker Davis, playing in slot two, managed to win an additional game but still lost 3-6, 4-6 to Richmond’s Andrew Balzer.

In the third singles match, John Pittman defeated Scotland’s Carter Dold 6-1, 6-3. The middle order in the singles lineup put a little bit of pressure on Richmond, as the number four and five players forced a third set. However, it wasn’t enough. In game four, Brandon Ingram defeated Robert Beacham 5-7, 7-6, 1-10. In the fifth slot, Raider Gary Boyette won 7-5, 5-7, 10-7. And in the sixth and final singles match, Logan Deese defeated Victor Still 7-5, 7-5.

On the doubles side, the matches seemed to be a little more contested, but the Scots still were unable to gather any points. Blackman and Davis lost 4-8 to Balzer and Ingram. In the number two slot, Beacham and Dold fell to Auman and Pittman 2-6. Finally, in the third spot, Phillips and Still were defeated by Boyette and Deese by a score of 4-8.

Coach Matthew Smith said his team had a good practice this week, but just wasn’t able to translate that into results Thursday against their rival.

“Our guys came out with good energy today, but we couldn’t put it together,” Smith said. “We have some time to regroup before the next match, and I hope the guys use that time wisely.”

Scotland’s next match is Thursday at Purnell Swett. The match begins at 4 p.m.
