Two Maxton men are dead following separate and unrelated incidents, according to authorities.

Investigators say one man — Willie Manning —was shot and killed during an apparent home invasion on Sunday.

The 61-year-old Manning of 135 Stealth Drive, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to sheriff’s Capt. Anthony Thompson. He said deputies went to the home after receiving a call at 8:45 p.m. about “multiple people” being shot.

Daniel McLaughlin, 54, of the same address, suffered gunshot injuries and was taken to an undisclosed hospital, according to Thompson.

Thompson said that the shooting happened after a man came to the home and asked for gasoline for his vehicle and was quickly followed by two more men.

In a separate case on Monday, a Maxton man was killed and a second person was injured when a tractor-trailer ran a stop sign and struck a pickup truck.

Anthony Bryant, 50, of 11917 N.C. 130 West, Maxton, was traveling west on Deep Branch Road when his 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck was hit at 3:32 p.m. by a tractor-trailer headed north. A passenger in the car, Jeannette Bryant, of the same address, suffered “disabling” injuries, according to the patrol, and was treated at Southeastern Regional Medical Center and transferred.

The tractor was driven by David Keith Shelley, 44, of Iron Station in Lincoln County, according to a report by Trooper David Raynor. Shelly, who was not injured, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

According to the report, the two vehicles collided at the intersection of Chicken and Deep Branch roads when Shelley, who was driving the posted speed limit of 45 mph, drove his vehicle through a stop sign.

Bryant was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle’s airbags did deploy, according to the report.
