Mark 15:31 – “Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save.”

Have you ever stopped to think that Jesus did not have to die? At many points in the narrative of the redemptive story, Jesus could have said – “Enough!” He could have saved Himself the torture and agony of the creature’s treatment of the Creator. He could have diverted the road to the cross and not gone through what He did. He could have stayed in Galilee and not gone into Jerusalem. He could have escaped from the Garden of Gethsemane, or answered Pilate differently and been released. He could have just walked away from the cross and saved Himself all that He went through – and we would not have a hope. You see, the chief priests spoke truth – in order for Him to save others, He could not save Himself. And because He didn’t, we have a New Hope for Today based upon the gift of salvation He so freely offers us.

Marshall is pastor of New Hope Baptist Church
