To the editor:
I have lived in Scotland County for 60 years. I purchased a trailer in 1999 for $900. Today I received a tax notice telling me the tax value of said trailer is $2,000. Really. This is the reason some of us are losing faith in the different offices in Scotland County. I am going straight to pay this, as I will my other tax notices. That’s what a good citizen is supposed to do. If you would like to purchase said trailer for only $700, you can. That will allow you to make $1,300 dollars on the sale. Maybe the county could use the money. I’m not angry, I’m disappointed in you and your office.
Shortly afterward I received a call from a lady at the tax office, who was very rude. I don’t think she was happy working on a Wednesday afternoon. She said one year they might classify my trailer as a camper and the next year a trailer. That’s probably why I had to pay so much this year. She said they don’t put the tax value on the cards they send out. She wanted to know where I got $2,000 from. I’m enclosing a copy of the tax bill I received with the amount that is taxed. It’s one thing being hateful to the tax payers; it’s another to carry the title Dumb As Wood.
I sure hope the rest of the folks at the tax office are more serious about their jobs than the lady than called me. I’m sure she was just having a bad day. Folks, if I could sell my place for half of what the Scotland County tax office has my place valued, I would be happy.
