A Laurinburg man was arrested this week after an eight-mile pursuit by Laurinburg police, authorities say.

At 10:46 a.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to the home of Joseph D. Chavis at 425 Avery St. after a report of domestic disturbance, according to Lt. Cliff Sessoms of the Laurinburg Police Department.

Chavis had left the premises by the time officers arrived, but he was located driving a Mercedes on Carver Street, police said.

When officers tried to stop Chavis’ vehicle, he refused to pull over, even as police followed him with sirens blaring, officials said.

Police pursued him for about eight miles to the intersection of Gillis and McFarland roads, north of Laurel Hill, with Chavis exceeding the posted speed limit in an attempt to lose them, police said.

“The pursuit did reach speeds in excess of 100 mph, at which point he lost control of his vehicle,” said Sessoms.

After hitting a pine tree at the intersection, Chavis attempted to flee on foot, but was located walking on Gillis Road by Det. Jon Edwards of the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department.

Chavis was taken by EMS to Scotland Memorial Hospital and released shortly after, at which point he was arrested and charged with fleeing to elude arrest, driving while license revoked, and injury to real property. He was placed in the Scotland County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.

Chavis was convicted of similar charges in 2003, and since then has done time for larceny, driving while intoxicated, and possession with intent to sell Schedule II controlled substances. He is currently on probation after being found guilty of assault on a female in Mecklenburg County last year.
