He is survived by two children: daughter Leola Avery of Greensboro and son Leo Avery, III of Durham and his brother Franklin Avery of Laurinburg.
He worked at Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York for 30 years before his retirement in 2007. Services were held at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, New York.
Interment was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Morganville, N.J.
