Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at the East Laurinburg Church of God officiated by the Rev. Jeffrey McGirt. Burial will follow the service with military honors in Meadow Brook Cemetery in Lumberton.
Rev. Hayes was born June 2, 1924 in Robeson County, son of the late Wingate Emery Hayes and Viola Sanderson Hayes. He was a WWII Veteran who proudly served with the United States Army. He was a devoted pastor, serving faithfully in the Church of God including the Mt. Airy Church of God, Red Springs Church of God and also serving as the associate pastor of the East Laurinburg Church of God. He also conducted many prison ministries and nursing home ministries. He also enjoyed playing his guitar. Rev. Hayes will be remembered for his love and devotion the Lord and his family.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Odessa B. Hayes; his son, Joseph E. Hayes, Jr.; and siblings Bertha Walters, Taft Hayes, Elizabeth Lupo, Sadie Page and Bryan Hayes.
He leaves behind his wife, Mrs. Ruth Tucker Hayes of the home and his
stepdaughter, Sandra Williams and husband Tommy of Laurinburg. Also surviving is David Roper and wife Helen of Alaska and Bonnie Mitchell and husband Arthur of Colorado; siblings Myrtle Johnson, Frank Hayes, Benjamin Hayes and wife Pat, Johnson Hayes and wife Doris, Sylvia Pressley and husband Charles, Ester Hayes, Billy Wayne Hayes and wife Debbie; and a sister-in-law, Loraine Hayes.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
