A bounty of goods from electronics to toys to unique jewelry pieces will be on sale at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Laurinburg when the annual yard sale takes place from 7 a.m until noon on Saturday.
According to event organizer Joan Porth, some 40 tables featuring "thousands" of items have been assembled in the church fellowship hall for this year's event.
"The church community has been extremely generous this year in providing contributions for our yard sale," said Porth, who has coordinated the event since its beginning four years ago. "We will have plenty of items to choose from, including exercise equipment, televisions, beautiful wrought iron beds, cribs, musical instruments and much more."
Of special note, Porth said, will be the jewelry.
"We will have lots of gorgeous jewelry for sale, including gold and sterling silver pieces as well as authentic Native American items," she said. "We invite you to come out for a fun filled day of great bargains, all reasonably priced."
A variety of foods will be on the menu as well.
"We will have coffee and donuts, as well as hot dogs, condiments and sodas prepared by the Knights of Columbus," Porth said. "In addition, the Filipino community will be selling homemade foods including their famous spring rolls during the event. So come join us for plenty of good food while you browse the more than 4,000 items in our sale."
Church member Eleanor Cross assists Porth each year in preparing for the event.
"We begin collecting materials in May, and store the items as they come in," Cross said. "Right now we have five rooms filled with items with more furniture to come; we encourage you to come browse the different rooms filled with all kinds of items for sale, and don't forget to look under the tables; sometimes those special treasures will be in less obvious places."
The annual yard sale was the brainchild of Father JaVon Saxon, pastor of St. Mary's since 2005.
"I thought that with all the spring cleaning that takes place in May, it might be a good idea to bring these items together at the church for a nice yard sale," Saxon said. "Not only does it generate funds for the church, but it brings people together in the spirit of community fellowship."
Donations are still being accepted for the Saturday sale, which may be brought to the church office at 800 South Main Street in Laurinburg. For larger items contact Sandra between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays at 276-4468.
An auction conducted by Dr. and Mrs. Timothy Moses will begin at noon for items that still remain following the event.
