Thomas Stewart, 29, of 8163 Jesse Smith Road in Laurel Hill, was traveling west at about noon on Friday on Jesse Smith Road in a 1996 Buick when he crossed the center line, ran off the road and struck a tree, according to a spokesman for the patrol.
Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene.
There has been speculation that a medical issue may have caused the accident, according to the patrol.
Stewart was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
