Seven council seats are up for grabs during the Nov. 9 election, including District 12, which includes Scotland County, Maxton, and Alfordsville.
Monday began the filing period, which runs through Sept. 10.
To be eligible to serve on the council, an individual must be at least 21 years old and an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe, according to tribal spokesman Alex Baker.
Tribal council candidates also must have maintained their principal residence in their district for at least the past year, and must not have a felony record, Baker said.
Candidates can file for the election at the Tribal Housing Complex weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The filing fee is $150.
Also up for election are seats in: District 2, which includes Back Swamp, Fairmont, and Smyrna; District 3, Lumberton; District 6, Raft Swamp and North Pembroke; District 7, South Pembroke; District 8, Burnt Swamp; and District 13, Cumberland County, Parkton, Lumber Bridge, and North St. Pauls.
