A woman was hospitalized after her car hit an embankment on Monday.

The woman was driving a black and red Volkswagen Beetle south on US 15-401-501 when her car left the road to the right near Leiths Creek at about 3 p.m., according to authorities.

There were no witnesses and the woman was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital, leaving Laurinburg police without an account of the wreck.

Police believe the Volkswagen jumped the embankment, tumbled, landed upright and slide back down into the embankment. Authorities said it was single-car accident.

The car's bumper was at the end of a tire tracks going across the embankment, with a headlight laying nearby. The other headlight was laying near several dents in the ground in front of where the vehicle stopped.

Police were not sure if charges would be filed. The woman's name and address were not available at presstime.
