The Pee Dee Antique Power Club presented scholarships this year to four students entering college this fall.

Scotland County recipients were Lisa Hickman, who attends Fayetteville Technical Community College, and Michael Christopher Parker, now a student at North Carolina State. Samantha Alpiger of Fayetteville and Alexander Hertzog of Huntersville were also awarded.

Secretary Sue Ivey said that the club has awarded 24 scholarships in the past seven years.

"Members of the club nominate those graduating high school seniors who they feel should receive recognition," Ivey said. "The scholarships are funded by our annual antique tractor raffle, with the drawing held each year in October at the John Blue Festival in Laurinburg."

For "six or seven years" the club has held the raffle, Ivey said, as a fundraiser to sponsor various projects.

"We've given more than $35,000 back to the community," Ivey said. Other club projects include presenting two boxes of food from Angel Food Ministries to needy individuals, and assisting the elderly at Christmas.

A student in the dental hygiene program at FTCC, Hickman expressed gratitude toward the club for the receipt of her scholarship.

"I am very grateful for this opportunity," Hickman said. "Otherwise it would have been hard to pay for the uniform and dental tools necessary for use in the program."

Ivey thanked the community for supporting the club each year.

"The Pee Dee Antique Power Club is grateful to the community for purchasing raffle tickets for a tractor each year," Ivey said. "The drawing is always held at the John Blue Festival, and we hope to see you there at this year's raffle."

Raffle tickets at $1 each may be obtained by calling Ivey at 276-3280 or by contacting any club member. Tickets will also be sold at the 27th annual John Blue Cotton Festival, to take place Oct. 9-10, 2010 in Laurinburg. You do not have to be present to win.
