Early season games give coaches a chance to see how their team stacks up against the competition.

If Thursday night’s opener was any indication, Scotland has a very potent offense.

On the strength of 27 second quarter points, the Scots put away border rival Marlboro County in the first of two season match-ups with a 42-2 victory at Pate Stadium.

"I was real pleased with the effort that our guys gave," said SHS jayvee’ coach David Hunt. I thought we executed real well and did alot of good things."

Scotland (1-0) took an 8-0 lead when quarterback Storm Davis found Justin Brown for a 20-yard touchdown pass with seven minutes to play in the opening quarter.

Davis threw for his second touchdown of the contest, finding running back Jalen McLean from eight yards out with 8:33 to play in the second.

The missed PAT made it 14-0 .

Two minutes later, a safety added two more points to the Scots total.

On the Bulldogs kick-off, Brown nearly untouched, sprinted 70 yards to the end zone.

Davis picked up his third touchdown of the night, this time using his feet, scoring on a quarterback sneak.

A punt return just before the half made it 35-0.

Jamie McLean opened up the second half by returning the kick off for a touchdown, Scotland’s third score via special teams.

"Even though we executed well, I felt that we got tired early on because we ran alot of offensive plays," Hunt said. "We took care of the ball and didn't turn the ball over and special teams had three big returns, so I thought we were pretty solid there."

The Scots will be on the road next Thursday, traveling to New Hanover. Kick off is set or 6:30 p.m.
