The Laurinburg/Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for this year’s class.
The purpose of the program is to instill leadership qualities in participants by exposing them to many different facets of life in Scotland County. Participants for Junior Leadership will meet monthly to learn about county history, public speaking, education, industry, and local non-profit agencies. The program will begin with a team-building workshop, and end with a trip to Raleigh to meet with local legislators.
Civic responsibility is another aspect of the program, and students must complete 20 hours of individual community service. The group will also need to complete a community service project as a team.One participant will be selected to attend the General Hugh Shelton Leadership Challenge, which is a leadership workshop through North Carolina State University. The program is a six day experience to help students expand their knowledge and skills of what it takes to be a leader. Students have the opportunity to participate in team-building activities, low and high ropes courses, service projects and nightly activities to get to know others participating in the program.Junior Leadership Scotland is open to any high school sophomore or junior that has a permanent address in Scotland County. Applications for Junior Leadership can be picked up from Sallie Clemmons in the Scotland High School main office or from the chamber office at 606 Atkinson Street. Students with completed applications will be selected on a first come, first served basis. Applications are also available online at www.laurinburgchamber.com.
