For those of us in Scotland County, the scenario is especially acute. Our industries have been cutting back or closing up shop for years.
The most recent jobless rate for our county —16.3 percent — was the highest in the state.
As a result, many nonprofits in our community — the Scotland County Literacy Council for one — are suffering.
What can you do? A lot, according to United Way Executive Director Barbara Alexander.
She says volunteers can make a difference and are still much needed to assist with the United Way's annual Day of Caring planned for next Friday.
Volunteers are needed at Habitat for Humanity for painting and vinyl siding; at the Humane Society to bathe animals and for cleaning; at the Health Clinic for drawing blood; at Church and Community Services to distribute flyers and for food bag preparation; and at the county 4-H to lead a sewing class.
All volunteers are asked to report to the Dulin Center at 8 a.m. on Aug. 20 for registration and breakfast provided by the Scotland Health Care System.
"Participants are asked to contact the United Way at 276-6064 to volunteer for one of the upcoming projects," Alexander said.
"Thank you so very much for making a difference in our community by volunteering on this day," she added. "The United Way and our partner agencies appreciate you and all the work you do."
Those who are unable to volunteer on Aug. 20 are asked to consider donating items on the agency "wish list."
Your help can make a great difference to the agencies involved and the community they serve.
