The 12-year-old from Scotland County recently competed in the Hershey's National Track-and-Field event that were held in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and earned a silver medal in softball throw.
Holfert was happy to earn the silver medal, but loved the experience.
"I'm glad that I got to go and do good," Holfert said. "Among all the things that I've accomplished in athletics, this ranks really high."
Holfert, who also competes on the Elite travel baseball team in Laurinburg and in Scotland County Parks and Recreation football league, had a throw 204 feet. The guy who beat him had a toss of 208 feet. He was one of 400 kids that competed out the 400,000 children from the United States and Canada who originally competed back in late June.
Terry Holfert, Cross' father, said that Hershey paid for the kids' airfare, put them up in dormitories at Elizabethtown College. While there, national spokesperson Rayford Johnson and Carl Lewis both gave speeches to the children before the competition.
(Terry) Holfert was very proud that his son had the chance to compete for a second time. (Cross) Holfert won the gold medal in the softball throw in 2008.
"I'm very proud of him for just making it that far and winning a medal is just an added bonus," said (Terry) Holfert. "As one of the 400 out of 400,000 kids that competed, that something to be proud of right there. It gives him something to work on and maybe he'll have a chance to go back next year."
